What is Kyo-yaki?

Inheriting History, Reflecting the Present

Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki are among Kyoto’s most renowned traditional crafts. Their name originally referred to pottery produced around the Kiyomizu slopes in Kyoto, but today it encompasses a wide range of ceramics crafted across the city — each piece carrying the spirit of heritage while embracing the sensibility of modern life.

Kyoto Ceramics: The Spirit of Wabi and Sabi

Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki developed during the early Edo period, flourishing alongside the rise of the tea ceremony culture in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district. These ceramics embody not only the functional beauty of daily utensils but also the quiet spiritual depth of wabi-sabi — a reflection of simplicity, impermanence, and grace.

While we make every effort to ensure that product photos are as close to the actual color as possible, please note that the appearance may vary slightly depending on your monitor or browser settings

Each piece is carefully handcrafted by skilled artisans.
As a result, slight variations in color, shape, pattern, and texture may occur — these subtle differences are part of the unique character that only handcrafting can bring.

Do not use over an open flame or in an oven. Doing so may cause damage or deformation

After use, gently wash with a mild detergent. Allow it to dry completely before storing — doing so will help preserve its beauty and quality for years to come.

The fine crackle pattern (crazing), tiny pinholes, iron spots, and slight variations in glaze are all natural characteristics that occur during the handcrafted process using natural materials.

These are not defects but unique expressions of each individual piece — please appreciate them as part of its natural beauty.
