What is Kyo-yaki / Kiyomizu-yaki?

Carrying History, Reflecting the Present
Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki are among Kyoto’s most renowned traditional crafts. Originally, the name referred to pottery produced mainly around the Kiyomizu-zaka area in Kyoto city. Today, it is used as a collective term for ceramics made by kilns across Kyoto.
Pottery That Reflects the Spirit of Wabi-Sabi
Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki developed in the early Edo period, centered in the Higashiyama area of Kyoto, against the backdrop of the flourishing tea ceremony culture. Cherished for their ability to express not only the “beauty of utility” but also the spirit of wabi-sabi and the heart of hospitality, these ceramics have long resonated with the refined sensibilities of tea masters.

Before You Purchase

We do our best to present product photos that closely match the actual item. However, please note that the color may look slightly different depending on your monitor or browser settings. Thank you for your understanding.

Each piece is carefully handcrafted by artisans, so there may be subtle differences in color, shape, pattern, and texture. These variations are part of the unique character and charm of handmade pottery.

We are sorry, but this product is not suitable for use in ovens or over open flames. Doing so may cause damage or deformation.

After use, please wash gently with a mild dish soap. Be sure to dry it thoroughly before storing, so you can enjoy its beauty for many years to come.

The fine crackle patterns (called kannyu), tiny pinholes, iron spots (small black marks from firing), and subtle variations in the glaze are natural characteristics that occur during the process of working with natural materials and handcrafting. These are not defects but rather part of the unique character of each piece.
